This animation sequence that features the Beatles song Helter Skelter, is the the opening sequence for the the film Across the Universe (directed by Julie Taymor).
In order to execute this animation, we decided to build the waves practically out of newspaper and wire, and then stop-motion animate all the newspaper waves crashing.
Using After Effects, we composited stock ocean waves footage and staged riot scenes filmed and directed by Julie Taymor, onto the animated newspaper waves.
The end of the animation, when everything transitions into a luminous golden disco ball that reveals the title of the film Across the Universe, was designed and created by Heebok Lee.
